Remembering
Today was Maureen Oconnor's memorial service. I met Maureen last year at the Community Habilitation Center. She worked with a number of my students who visited the Center every Wednesday. Maureen gave the best hugs; her smile opened up the heart in the most profound of ways. As I heard her friends share their memories of her this morning, I realized that remembering is an act of love, that the service was a manifestation of love, of Maureen, of God.
A couple of minutes ago I got off the phone with my sister and we both remembered our mom. Our conversation was very much in the spirit of today's memorial, our way to hold close to heart the blessing of someone who also brought so much love and tenderness into this world. I'm grateful once again for the communion of saints and for the act of (re) membering those who are no longer in this physical plane with us. Jesus' words resonate: Take and eat, this is my body given for you; do this in (re)membrance of me.
